Brendan Carthy RIP

Louth GAA is mourning this morning following the passing of Minor Board chairman Brendan Carthy.

The Roche Emmets clubman has been pivotal in reviving the underage game in the county in recent years and was hugely influential in implementing the OgSport Lú and Go Games programmes.

Brendan, who worked in Dundalk IT, also had a major role to play in the development of the Darver development, where was project manager in the early years.

Despite battling illness in recent years, Brendan remained committed to Louth GAA and many will mourn his passing.

Brendan was beloved husband of Mary (née Lennon), devoted father of Liam, Dermot, Conor and the late Padraig (who died in infancy), dear son of Margot and the late Hugh (Ard Easmuinn, Dundalk) and brother of Seamus, Sean, Una and the late Ciaran. He will also be sadly missed by his mother-in-law Eileen, aunt, uncles, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and a large circle of relatives and friends.

Brendan is reposing at his home in Killin, Brid-A-Crin from 6pm to 10pm on Mondya and 4pm to 8pm on Tuesday. Removal on Wednesday at 10.45am to St Joseph’s Church, Castletown, arriving for Mass at 11.30am. Funeral afterwards to Kilcurry Cemetery.

Sinead’s anthem becoming a major hit after Monaghan win

Local singer/songwriter Sinead McNally was on the Breakfast Roll show with Sean McCaffrey on Northern Sound last Friday and with the Monaghan station busy preparing for Sunday’s Ulster final against Donegal, the Knockbridge girl decided to write a song for the occasion.

In the end, Sinead – who plays GAA herself for Dowdallshill – changed the words to Nathan Carter’s hit ‘Wagon Wheel’ to recreate it as ‘The Farney Army’.

The song has been getting a lot of attention on YouTube in the last few days and, in particular, since the Farney men’s famous win yesterday that ended a 25 year wait for an Ulster title.

It already has almost 8,000 views and that number is expected to soar in the coming days as our neighbouring county basks in a famous win.

Check it out above.

Monaghan are currently basking in the glory of a first Ulster Championship win in 25 years but little do most people know that it was a Louth man who played a pivotal role in their victory over Donegal on Sunday.

Richie Ford from the Dundalk Gaels club is the statistician and video analyst with the Farney men and it was therefore his role to try and pick holes in the All-Ireland winners.

That appeared to work to good effect as Monaghan ran out impressive 0-13 to 0-7 winners over Jim McGuinness’s men in Clones.

Richie, a teacher in Bay Estate National School, has now got the better of the Tir Chonaill men twice, having also filled the same role when Louth beat Donegal in a replay to land the Division Two league title in Cavan in 2006.

Meanwhile, there will be another Louth person celebrating Monaghan’s win tonight with local singer/songwriter Sinead McNally invited to The Diamond in Monaghan town to sing her song ‘The Farney Army’ during the team’s homecoming celebrations.

Boylesports expanding but in London, rather than Dundalk

Local bookmakers Boylesports are expanding their digital business but have opted to do so in London rather than Dundalk, according to a report in today’s Irish Times.

The company, which has its headquarters in the Finnabair Industrial Estate in the Inner Relief Road, has opened a London office to recruit staff needed to support the planned expansion of its digital business.

Founder John Boyle has hired former head of European marketing at rival Sportingbet, James Arnold, to lead the operation.

Mr Arnold said Boylesports had “an ambitious growth strategy” and told the Irish Times that the staff and skills needed were more likely to be available in a large urban centre than in its home base and so opted for the British capital, as it is targeting that market.

“In terms of recruiting the specific expertise that we need to grow the digital side of the business, we felt that this was more readily available in London,” he said.

“There were a lot of other efficiencies as well,” Mr Arnold added. These included the fact that many of the group’s strategic partners and affiliates, such as software developers and other suppliers, also have offices there.

Five staff, some of whom formerly worked with Mr Arnold at Sportingbet, are now based in the new office and the group intends adding to this number over time.

The office will be responsible for marketing the group’s digital offering and directing its growth.

Boylesports has a strong retail presence but decided last year it needed to grow the digital side of its operations. As a result, it split the two businesses into separate divisions and appointed Keith O’Loughlin as chief executive of online.

Mr Arnold was appointed chief marketing officer in May. The group has invested €1 million-plus in technology and systems over the past year and its digital strategy involves a particular emphasis on mobile.

Gardai are investigating the cause of a fire at the Park Hotel on the Armagh Road last night.

The local fire service was called to the hotel around 11.30pm to deal with a small blaze in the golf clubhouse area.

The hotel, which is understood to be on the verge of being sold for close to its €1.5m asking price, has been closed since October 2010.

Last month a wily farmer broke into the grounds of the hotel to cut grass on the golf course in order to make bales of hay.

Gary Moran has raised the matter of dumping on Defender’s Row over on the Dundalk Northend and Friends Facebook page.

Gary, who works nearby in McGeough’s Bar in Roden Place, took the above picture this afternoon. It is clear to see piles of rubbish building up in a piece of disused land to the rear of homes on Market Street, which is only blocked off by a fence from Dromad Hire.

This land had been for sale for some time but little has been done with it in the last number of years.

Sharron McQuaid shared the above picture of Park Street in decades gone by recently over on Facebook.

There was an interesting reply by Ciaran McNulty though, who used an image from Google Maps (see below) to compare how the street has changed over the years.

He said: “Pretty much every building has changed but I think the building nearest the left is Paddy Power and the shop/bar front with the people and the barrels outside is the leathergoods place (Cassidy’s video shop).”
