Pupils practicing for Féile Dhún Dealgan

Pupils and teachers throughout Dundalk are eagerly preparing for Féile Dhún Dealgan, the annual Irish language Scoildrámaíocht festival. The Dundalk festival is being resurrected this year as part of An Cumann Scoildrámaíochta’s 80th anniversary celebrations, having been first established in 1934.

The festival gives students the opportunity to act, gain confidence and have fun all through the medium of Irish. Amongst the schools that will be participating this year will be Réalt na Mara, Redeemer Girls and Coláiste Lú. Winners of the competition will go on to represent the region in Féile Laighean – the Leinster Provincial Festival.

This year’s event will be held in Dundalk IT’s Mac Anna Theatre on Friday 28th February from 10am to 12.30pm, kick-starting Seachtain na Gaeilge in the town. The Mac Anna theatre is a fitting venue as the original founder and chief organiser of Féile Dhún Dealgan for many years was Mai Nic Anna, a sister of the famous director and playwright Tomás Mac Anna, after whom the theatre is named.

Entrance on the day is open to the public and will be €1 for pupils / €4 for adults in what is sure to be a fulfilling and exciting day for all those involved. As the Irish proverb says, “Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí!”
