The Narrow Water Bridge project is not dead, according to Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
The proposed bridge, which aims to link Warrenpoint and Omeath, looked set to go ahead last year until Louth County Council pulled the plug on it after estimates on the cost of construction were well over what they had anticipated.
With no resolution in sight, the project lost its promised EU funding although local campaigners have refused to throw in the towel on it.
Speaking in Dundalk yesterday though, the Taoiseach said he understood why the bridge didn’t commence work last year but was hopeful of a resolution being made this summer on the matter.
“The difference between what came in and what allocated was just too great,” he said.
He said the issue will now be raised at a forthcoming meeting of the North-South ministerial committee in June, which the Taoiseach would chair.
Kenny was in town yesterday as part of a visit of the North East to canvass alongside Fine Gael candidates in the forthcoming local elections.
