County Louth is one of just six of the 18 local authority areas whose designated bathing areas have achieved ‘good’ water quality status, according to a new report form the EPA.

The others to meet the EU guideline standards were Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, Meath, Clare, Kerry and Donegal.

The four bathing areas in Louth which were analysed were Shelling Hill/Templetown, Port Lurganboy, Clogherhead and Seapoint.

Laytown/Bettystown, which is another popular beach for locals to visit, also achieved ‘good’ water quality status.

Front Strand Beach in Balbriggan was the nearest beach which only had sufficient water quality while Lilliput in Lough Ennel in Mullingar was the nearest with reported poor water quality.

From this year a new water standard will come into play, with a new excellent rating up for grabs.
