The North East representative for the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has described Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda as the hospital with the worst overcrowding problem in the country.
According to the INMO there were 33 people being treated on trolleys at the hospital this morning, down from 43 yesterday.
The HSE says that the most critically ill patients are being prioritised, meaning that those in a less serious condition might face some delays to be treated.
However, Tony Fitzpatrick of the INMO says that the overcrowding problem in Drogheda is now the worst in the country and hasn’t been helped in recent years by the closure of the Louth County Hospital in Dundalk.
He told LMFM: “Drogheda is now probably the worst overcrowded emergency department in the country.
“The problem is that over many years there hasn’t been enough funding. There hasn’t been enough beds put into the system, indeed there have been beds taken out of the system with the closure of Louth County,” he said.
