ryanair-aircraft-6-390x285A mother and baby from Dundalk were amongst those hurt when a Ryanair flight from Dublin to Barcelona hit turbulence on Monday.

The flight to Reus hit a patch of turbulence unexpectedly, cause passengers and crew to be thrown around the cabin.

At least two local families were on board including a couple travelling with their children, with the mother , who asked not to be named, saying: “I cannot explain how frightening it was. I have bruises today and think we may have to swim home.”

Her youngest child also suffered minor bruising to the face but thankfully her other kids were just startled.

She said: “Loads of people were screaming and crying. I had to lie on kids to hold them in their seats.”

Another passenger told TheJournal.ie that people were “catapulted from their seats”, hitting the ceiling.

“After several tense minutes the air hostess frantically asked was there a nurse or doctor on board several times, causing panic among passengers. We were concerned that it was the pilot that was injured as the air hostess rushed to the cockpit.

“Eventually the pilot made an announcement, saying he was unaware the turbulence was so strong.

“We were absolutely terrified as the plane pitched aggressively roughly over a 60 degree angle throwing debris all over the plane.

“After numerous conversations with fellow passengers and even the injured air hostess, no one has ever experienced this type of fear while flying.

A spokesperson for the airline confirmed to TheJournal.ie that there were injuries, though they were minor, and said that medical assistance had been called.

“Our flight from Dublin to Reus experienced some severe turbulence on approach to Reus Airport. Two customers and three cabin crew members sustained minor cuts and bruising.

“The captain called ahead to request the Reus ambulance service to meet the aircraft and provide medical assistance to these crew and customers.”
