Louth County Council is set to reduce the number of road gritters in the county from seven to four as part of a cost-saving scheme that will save around €160,000.
The changes were revealed at last night’s meeting of the Municipal District in Dundalk with chief executive Joan Martin saying that the abolition of the town and borough councils had allowed officials to streamline services across the county.
She insisted that no less roads would be covered than last winter, with one of the major changes being that the lorry would be operated by one man rather than two.
While a number of councillors backed the change, Cllr Tomás Sharkey commented that he was “in shock” at the decision
