Ski slope may still go ahead, insists Curran

The much-debated ski slope facility, which had been earmarked for the Racecourse Road area of the town, may not be dead in the water.

That’s according to the businessman behind the ambitious project, known as Altitude, which was granted planning permission back in 2010 only for that decision to be overturned by An Bord Pleanala.

Last week Talk of the Town revealed that a part of the land that had been earmarked for the facility was on the verge of being sold.

However, Sam Curran of Innovative Leisure Systems – the company behind the ski scope facility – told The Dundalk Democrat this week that he hadn’t given up on the project.

He told the paper that ILS were willing to go back to the drawing board on it and may have to “trim the project down in size and propose it on a smaller scale.”

He added that he still had hope for a “down-sized facility which would regenerate Dundalk.”

The proposed facility was to include a ski slope, water park, indoor events area, and indoor and outdoor adventure park, cinema and bowling alley while there were hopes for a hotel and casino down the line.

The casino element led to a huge backlash locally though although ILS always insisted that they would only go ahead with that phase of the project if they were given the go ahead by Irish law.
