Dundalk FC’s Richie Towell has been named the SSE Airtricity/SWAI Player of the Month for April.
The midfielder was presented with his award by Leanne Sheil at an event in the Davenport Hotel in Dublin today.
This is the third time that the former Celtic player has won the award after also scooping it last July and in August 2013.
The dynamic Dubliner scored seven goals in five games during the month. He was also the Lilywhites’ only scorer in four of those fixtures and so his goals directly earned 10 points for his side as they moved clear at the top of the table.
Meanwhile, it was confirmed yesterday that the Setanta Cup will not take place this season. Dundalk had been due to compete in the competition next month but a failure to agree dates with clubs north of the border means the competition has been shelved until next year at least.
Stephen Kenny’s side were runners-up last season to Sligo Rovers and also lost the 2011 decider to Shamrock Rovers.
