Dundalk Fire Service were called to a blaze at the Ard Dealgan apartment complex in Quay Street early this morning.

Rubbish, furniture and bedding were set a light in a third floor apartment with a hydraulic platform having to be used to gain access to the fire.

This is one of a number of fires that have taken place in Ard Dealgan in recent years. Built by Priory Hall developer Tom McFeely, 79 apartments in the complex were evacuated in 2009 due to fire safety concerns.

Since then the complex has become a nuisance for local residents who claim it attracts anti-social behaviour and drugs activity.

Louth County Council admitted earlier this week that they may look to convert the complex back into housing units.

Sinn Féin councillor Jennifer Green has hit out at those responsible for the fire.

“Once again, fire crews were called because anti-social elements within the apartment complex decided to set a fire. The residents have been calling for something to be done and yet again, their peace has been destroyed. Louth County Council have said they were exploring options to convert the complex into liveable accommodation, that can’t happen quick enough.”

She said she feared a death at the complex unless something was done soon.

“Someone is going to be killed at this complex. The council issued a derelict site notice some time ago and there has been no response from any of the ‘interested’ parties. Who has responsibility for this nightmare building? Beltary Properties hold the mortgage and haven’t responded to the Council. McFeely, the developer who built the complex appears to be off the scene now totally. Who is responsible? Who is paying these call out charges to the fire brigade?”

Cllr Green said she would organise a second picket at Ard Dealgan this day next week, Friday June 26th.
