Cigarette quartet are released without charge

The four men arrested by Gardaí yesterday following the seizure of nine million cigarettes at the Applegreen service station near Castlebellingham have been released without charge.

The men – aged 36, 38, 39 and 44 – were detained when Custom’s Officers, members of the Criminal Assets Bureau and Gardaí seized a truck and 4×4 vehicle at around 8.15am yesterday. The driver of the truck is reported to be from Co Louth, with two others from Dundalk and the other from Crossmaglen.

They were taken to Drogheda and Dundalk Garda Stations for questioning but have since been released, with files being prepared for the DPP.

The cigarettes are believed to have originated in Malaysia and had an estimated potential loss to Revenue of €3.7m
