The Environmental Protection Agency are set to bring Oxigen to court next month over the strong smell coming from their facility on the Coes Road.

The EPA launched an investigation into Oxigen last month after residents in the St Alphonsus Road and Ramparts Road areas of the town complained about the smell coming from the recycling plant.

Cllr Martin Bellew, who lives in nearby Meadow Grove, told a meeting of Dundalk Town Council that the smell was so bad recently that people attending Mass in St Joseph’s Redemptorist Church had to run to their cars to escape it.

He said the smell has been a problem for six or seven months with residents from the likes of Belfry Gardens, Bay Estate, Hyde Park and St Joseph’s Park all complaining.

In September local man Paraic Duffy launched a ‘stop the stink’ campaign after becoming frustrated by the smell while another councillor, Oliver Morgan, raised the matter as far back as last May.

Town Clerk Frank Pentony recently instructed the EPA to investigate the matter on the council’s behalf and they are now set to take court action, with councillors notified of the decision earlier today.
