There has been a spate of sheep thefts in North Louth in recent times, according to the Irish Farmers’ Journal.
According to the newspaper, five farmers have reported 55 ewes stolen from the Ardaghy commonage in Omeath in the last few months.
The affected farmers have said that their blackfaced horned ewes were all marked and accounted for and could only have been stolen from the commonage.
Louth IFA chairman Matthew McGreehan has urged greater collaboration between An Garda Síochána and the PSNI to clamp down on rustling.
“It is likely that some of the sheep that have been stolen from the Cooley Peninsula and the Ardaghy commonage are being used for slaughter across the border in the North.
“We have reported all thefts to the gardaí and we are urging them to do their utmost to work with their colleagues north of the border to clampdown on the problem,” McGreehan said.
