Dundalk company seeking funding for single-use towel aimed at gyms

Anne Butterly of Easydry

A Dundalk-based company producing a single-use towel made from wood pulp is seeking to raise €3m to expand into gyms.

Anne Butterly (42) is the brains behind Easydry, a disposable towel used in hair salons around the world. She founded the business in 2005, after a career sourcing raw materials for Irish businesses from Asia.

Its products are now bought by customers in 22 countries including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the Middle East.

Anne told The Sunday Independent: “The idea first occurred to me when I was spending time with a friend who was colouring her hair at home. She was using a plastic bag and a stained towel on her shoulders to protect her clothing.

“I just thought ‘there must be some alternative’. I started researching and developed a prototype made from wood pulp with manufacturers in Asia. Wood pulp is a great option because it absorbs moisture into the centre of the fabric as opposed to sitting on the top like a cotton towel. It also biodegrades in 12 weeks in compost conditions.”

Though Butterly intended to sell to consumers, it became apparent that the best place to start was in hair salons. “That’s how you gain traction with consumers; all of the major consumer brands have salon lines.”

Salon customers want clean, fresh towels above all else, she said. “Often you will sit down in a really nice salon and be handed a towel stained from previous dye jobs. It’s just not good enough.”

Irish salons that use the product include House of Colour and the L’Oreal and Wella academies. Peter Marks, its largest potential customer, does not use the product as it has its own group laundry facility.

Easydry entered the gym sector earlier this year. Its range includes a shower towel and a towel for cleaning gym equipment.

“Very few people actually bring a towel onto the gym floor in Ireland whereas in the UK and Australia you won’t get onto a gym floor without it,” she said. “It’s really important to clean gym machines after you use them for hygiene reasons, but it’s horrible to have to bring the towel home after. That’s where we come in.”

It has also developed a range for the medical sector and is looking for a global distributor.

Turnover is €1.5m. The company raised €1m five years ago and is now beginning a new funding round, looking to raise up to €3m.

“The hardest part has been changing the way people think, getting salons to make the switch from cotton towels to something totally different. It’s a new generation textile.”

Dundalk-based tech startup PlayerTek has secured a €1m investment for its wearable sports tracker, ahead of the product’s imminent launch in Ireland.

The firm was founded by Ronan Mac Ruairi and Kevin McDaid, both of whom have worked in education and technology development for years.

The founders claim that PlayerTek is the world’s first consumer wearable sports tracker designed to give aspiring amateur players the ability to optimise their training and matches – something previously available only to professional players.

The system measures more than 2,000 variables every second and uses algorithms to produce measurements and simple charts that help players improve their performance.

Investment into PlayerTek has come from Danu Investment Partners and entrepreneur Brendan Gilmore.

According to co-founder McDaid: “PlayerTek is a system that can give a player pinpoint accuracy.

It is much more sophisticated than the GPS in a jogger’s watch because it has to be – football, rugby, GAA, and hockey players, for example, don’t run in straight lines.”

The company is taking pre-orders for the PlayerTek device from its website, with an RRP of €249.

Its founders said that, following the Irish launch, PlayerTek will be launched in the UK to coincide with the start of the 2016 Premier League season.

Mac Ruairi added: “There has been huge interest in the product, as wearable tech is the area that so many brands are focusing in on at present.”

Dundalk Garda claims launderers are sending people to university to fuel illegal trade

dieselA local Garda member has claimed that crime gangs are sending people to university to get chemical engineering degrees so they can then employ them for their expertise in petrol stretching as well as diesel laundering along the border.

Dundalk-based Garda Robbie Peelo, who is on the Garda Representative Association’s central executive committee, told the GRA’s annual conference yesterday that the fuel-altering operations were extremely sophisticated and were not only costing the State lost revenue but millions in having to export the toxic sludge by-products for disposal in Germany.

“Revenue and Customs have introduced a dye [in diesel] that they have told us cannot be removed. But the diesel washing continues to take place. It is in fuel stations throughout the country,” Garda Peelo said.

Petrol stretching has become a serious problem in some of the border counties and has destroyed numerous car engines.

Garda Peelo also warned that illicit diesel and stretched petrol is making its way further south.

““You will see fuel lorries along the south Armagh and south Down border with registration plates from Cork, Kerry and Donegal. This isn’t just along the border. Fuel lorries will travel up from the areas, from as far down as west Cork, Kerry, Limerick, and Waterford, they will travel up to the border for the laundered fuel and travel back.

“People seem to think that this is a backyard operation. This isn’t; this is a very sophisticated operation. We have got individuals going through third-level, studying to become chemical engineers in order to beat these dyes and get them removed to sell washed diesel. This is a multi-million euro industry,” Garda Peelo said.

Part of the smoking area in Brubakers

Brubakers have applied to Louth County Council for planning permission to retain their smoking area on the first floor of the venue at 39 Park Street.

The matter has been rumbling on since late 2013 when owners Peaken Properties Ltd lodged An Bord Pleanala appeal against Dundalk Town Council’s decision to grant them permission to retain it, subject to six conditions.

The local authority claimed at the time that there had been an increase in floor space for the smoking area, which would have meant an increase in rates being paid. However, Declan and Bernie Muckian of Peaken Properties said that an existing office space was converted to form an addition to the small smoking area that was already there.

The council are due to decide on the matter by May 26th.
