An extra 130 higher education places have been announced for Dundalk Institute of Technology.

These places, which will be available through the Springboard programme, will provide jobseekers with an opportunity to improve their skills and get back to work.

Springboard is aimed at helping those who lost their jobs during the downturn to adapt their skills to the changing needs of the economy.

The extra part-time courses in Dundalk are focused in growth and high tech areas such as Business Enterprise Development, Digital Marketing and Digital Media, Agri-Food Business, Food Supply Management and Science in Computing.

The courses are free, part-time and are at certificate, degree and postgraduate level, with more than 80% of Springboard courses including work placements.

In the last year, more than 2,000 jobseekers have got back into work after completing a Springboard course.

Further details are available from www.dkit.ie

Thanks to Anthony O’Hagan for sharing this picture of the recent Blessing of the Graves ceremony in the old Castletown Graveyard on the Castleblayney Road.

It’s shocking to see how overgrown the graveyard has become, with the priest struggling to perform his duties on the day despite it being good weather-wise.

Surely something should be done about this, especially as it is the town’s original graveyard!

Celtic Legends showed they still have a touch of class at Oriel Park yesterday after beating Dundalk’s 2002 FAI Cup winning side 2-0 in a fundraising match.

Pierre van Hooijdonk gave the Hoops the advantage midway through the first half with a 25-yard lob with Brian O’Neil putting the game to bed six minutes from time when he slotted past Steve Williams from 10 yards after a neat pass from Regi Blinker.

Keith Wallace has a full report on the game over on Oriel Updates, which can be read here.

Have a listen to the below clip from the Last Word with Matt Cooper on Today FM from last Friday of Dundalk man Eamon Lowe taking on show presenter Matt Cooper over his decision to visit Drogheda and not Dundalk.

According to Eamon, “there is no comparison between the two towns” and Drogheda is a “town hated by every Dundalkownian.”

Cllr Jennifer Green

Jennifer Green will relinquish her role as chair of Dundalk Town Council when they hold their annual meeting tomorrow night.

The 31-year-old mother of two became the youngest ever female chairperson of the council a year ago but a quick year has passed since she succeeded the Green Party’s Cllr Marianne Butler in the role.

A Sinn Féin representative, the Mulholland Avenue woman was co-opted onto the council in April 2010 following the retirement of Ian Dooley.

She was only the fourth woman in the history of the council to hold the position of chair. A replacement will be elected at the meeting, with full details to appear on Talk of the Town when a replacement is voted in.

Within a week the Louth VEC as we know it will be no more as it prepares to amalgamate with its Meath equivalent.

That has led to plenty of nostalgic moments within the headquarters in Chapel Street in the last few weeks and today the head office staff gathered for a photo in what is their last few days working together.

Louth boss Aidan O’Rourke has made two changes to the side that lost to Wexford in the Leinster Championship quarter-final for Saturday’s Qualifier clash with Antrim in Drogheda.

Both changes were enforced with Conor McGuinness coming in for the suspended John O’Brien in the half back line and Colm Judge coming in for his first start of the season in place of Andy McDonnell, who has departed for America.

Judge will play at corner forward with St Mochta’s Ciaran Byrne dropping into the half forward line.

In what will be a further boost to the Wee County, the experienced duo of Darren Clarke and Ray Finnegan – who have been struggling with injuries all season – are included amongst the substitutes.

The Louth team in full is: Neil Gallagher; Padraig Rath, Dessie Finnegan, John Bingham; Conor McGuinness, Derek Crilly, Adrian Reid; Paddy Keenan, Brian Donnelly; Conor Rafferty, Brian White, Ciaran Byrne; Derek Maguire, Shane Lennon, Colm Judge. Subs: Joe Flanagan, Ronan Carroll, Darren Clarke, Gary Connolly, Bevan Duffy, Ray Finnegan, Gerard Hoey, Jim McEneaney, Kevin Rogers, Patrick Sheelan, Paraic Smith.

Throw-in at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday is at 3pm.
