St Brigid’s Way Pilgrimage to leave Dundalk this Sunday

Pilgrimage-panel

A nine day walk called the St Brigid’s Way Pilgrimage will be held between Sunday July 7th and Tuesday July 16th.

Local women Dolores Whelan and Karen Ward are inviting people to join them on walking pilgrimage from St Brigid’s Shrine in Faughart, Co Louth to her monastic city in Kildare town.

Amongst the stops they will take in include Fairhill Ringfort, Mount Oriel, the Hill of Slane, the Hill of Tara, Clarkstown Enclosure and The Curragh of Kildare.

Brigid’s Way is an alignment of ancient and sacred sites in Ireland which stretches from Brigid’s Well in Faughart, County Louth to Kildare.

This alignment was discovered by former Dundalk Democrat editor Anthony Murphy and his co-author Richard Moore during research for their book ‘Island of the Setting Sun’.

The route passes through some of the most prominent sites of Irish pre-history and Christianity, including the Hill of Tara and the Hill of Slane, Mount Oriel, Beauparc Motte, Realtoge Moated site and ends very close to a ringfort in the Curragh of Kildare.

This alignment of sacred sites reflects the Cygnus (Swan) constellation which was prominent in the skies at the time of Brigid’s birth in the 5th Century AD and is its reflection on earth of a heavenly configuration.

It might have formed an ancient “sightline”, pointing out the place on the northern horizon where the cross-shaped swan constellation (Cygnus) was rising in ancient times.

The pilgrimage will set out from Faughart at 2pm on Sunday and people are invited to join for even one day only.

Full details of how to get involved and where to stay (if required) ca be found on www.stbrigidsway.ie

Louth boss Aidan O’Rourke clearly doesn’t think much of Lions coach Warren Gatland’s decision to leave Brian O’Driscoll out of the British and Irish Lions squad for Saturday’s crucial final Test with Australia.

At least Louth’s players will know their place is safe if the manager refers to their good character in future.

The Army Bomb Disposal team says an object found in Ardee last night was not a hoax or viable device.

The item was found in a laneway off Tierney Street shortly before 9 o’clock last night.

A number of homes nearby were evacuated and residents were allowed return home after bomb disposal experts examined the object at around 11.10pm.

The bomb squad also attended a security alert in the Rathmullen Park of Drogheda in the early hours of yesterday morning, which was subsequently declared a hoax.

Jim Corr reaches settlement with ACC Bank

The Commercial Court has been told that a settlement has been reached between Dundalk musician Jim Corr and ACC Bank in relation to a judgment against the musician of €1.4m.

The bank secured the judgment in February 2011, after debts arose following the collapse of an investment business partnership involving Mr Corr.

He had claimed it was unfair that the bank was pursuing him for all the debt, when he had been involved in a partnership with two other men.

In cross-examination in May, lawyers for ACC accused Mr Corr of selling a property in order to put it out of reach of the bank.

The musician was due to face further questioning this morning, but the Commercial Court was told agreement had been reached between the parties.

Lawyers for the bank said the parties had had a “useful engagement” since the last hearing in May, and that details of an “agreement in principle” would be brought before the court this afternoon.

With that in mind, we thought this piece of advertising from local DIY store Hoey’s was worth sharing.

Thanks to Sharron McQuaid for sharing this superb shot of Earl Street in years gone by. Clearly visible is the old Queen’s Hotel, which now lies virtually empty with the exception of a few offices, including that of local solicitor Catherine Fee. RQ O’Neill’s also forms a prominent part of the street – which was then open to traffic. It remained there until 10 years ago when it was gutted by fire.

Grace Fellowship in Dundalk

A local church has been granted planning permission by Dundalk Town Council to retain its facility at the North Link Retail Park on the Coes Road.

Grace Fellowship had converted the retain warehouse into a church that included a Starbucks coffee shop, school and function rooms.

The church was fined last February after the building was described as a “firetrap” by district court Judge William Hamill.

The case had come before the court after the county council brought a prosecution against Grace Fellowship’s Hassan Boyle, alleging that changes to the building had started without a commencement notice and without a fire safety certificate.

Work was carried out earlier this year to render the building fire safe after the facility was briefly closed down last December.

Grace Fellowship now has full permission for the facility, thus ensuring the future of their Coes Road headquarters.

The Sing Li van, albeit an updated version, can still be found parked at Park Street most weekends, outside the old Dunnes Stores but sadly McCourt’s and Jack’s Snacks are no longer around.
