We’ve all heard about the impact the fodder crisis has been having on the farming community.

The situation has been so bad that the airport authorities at Dublin and Shannon Airports have allowed farmers to cut grass around the runways in order to help feed livestock.

Last month the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association estimated that the fodder crisis will cost the Irish farming industry over €1bn.

It appears that someone in the area – or near to the area at least – has decided to cash in on the crisis though.

It is reported that grass in and around the closed Park Hotel at Carnbeg on the Armagh Road has been cut in recent days.

The grass cutting is reported to have taken place overnight with thousands of euro worth of bales being created from the cutting of the hotel’s 38.35 hectares (90 acres).

As well as land around the hotel, there is also an 18 hole golf course on site, which has been closed for the best part of five years since the hotel went into receivership in August 2008.

The 84 bed Park Hotel closed its doors in October 2010 and is currently on the market for an estimated €1.5m through examiners KPMG.

While no one has yet been identified as having cut the grass, it is believed the perpetrators are from the area due to their knowledge of the hotel’s lands.
