The County Museum in Dundalk
The County Museum in Dundalk will open following the St Patrick’s Day Parade on Tuesday to allow parade goers the opportunity to take a look around the recently opened Birth of a Nation exhibition, free of charge.
The exhibition looks at the evolution of Irish nationhood from 1641-1916 and includes an original 1916 Proclamation as well as handwritten letters, documents, medals and weaponry from over almost three centuries.
There has been a tremendous positive reaction to this, the first exhibition to open in the country to mark the 1916 centenary. So much so that curator, Brian Walsh, felt it should be open for viewing on the national holiday.
“The Museum is normally closed on holidays but given the reaction to the exhibition and the fact that many people will already be in the town centre to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with their families and friends at the Parade, we felt they might also like to visit the Museum and see this special exhibition for free.
“We’ve also taken into account that the St Patricks Day Parade is traditionally a family event spanning generations. Birth of a Nation is an exhibition suited to both young and old but our younger visitors may have a better experience if they are joined by their grandparents who would be two generations closer to 1916 and who may have their own knowledge of that time through hearing about it from their own parents and grandparents.”
