Cllr John McGahon put forward the motion for Louth County Council to support a Yes vote in the marriage equality referendum on May 22nd

Louth County Council has passed a motion in support of the upcoming referendum on Marriage Equality.

Fine Gael Councillor John McGahon put the motion forward, with Bernardine Quinn of the local LGBT community addressing the meeting.

Speaking on his successful motion, Cllr McGahon said: “I was very pleased that my fellow councillors voted in support of marriage equality. In a few short weeks, the Irish people will go to the ballot box and they can do something very simple that will make a massive difference to their fellow citizens.

“A republic grants equal status to everyone regardless of race, creed, culture, language, or sexual orientation.  The legislation and this referendum will give us an opportunity to reaffirm our republic and the principles of equality upon which we were founded. It will allow us to recognise the rights of all our citizens. Marriage is a secure foundation for loving committed couples and everyone in our society should be free to marry on those terms.

“This is a vote about real people, people that we know, our family members, friends, people in our communities. I would urge everyone to go out on May 22nd and vote Yes. We have a chance to be part of a really historic decision and future generations will be thankful because of what we did one day in May.”
