Gardaí in Dundalk are investigating an armed robbery at the home of a local businessman last night.

The incident happened in the Ballymascanlon area around 10.45pm.

Three raiders, two armed with a shotgun and the other with an axe, broke into the property and escaped with a small sum of money, two ornaments and an iPad.

Two men and a woman were in the house at the time and are said to be traumatised by the incident.

The raiders wore tights to cover their faces. One was approximately 6ft in height, the other 5ft 9in and the third slightly smaller.

The Gardaí are also investigating a separate incident in which an armed robbery was carried out at a shop on the Newry Road.

The robbery took place around 9.30pm last night when a man, armed with shaving blade tried to rob a female staff member. He fled the scene empty-handed though after the scarf which was covering his face began to slip.

He is described as being 5ft 11in in height and was wearing blue jeans and a dark jacket with a red logo.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9335577 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
