The InstaWalk will get underway at Courthouse Square

The second InstaWalk has been scheduled for Wednesday July 24th by the group behind InstaDundalk.

The meetup will happen at 7pm at the Courthouse Square and all are welcome.

The idea of the meeting is to bring local Instagram users together offline. The plan is to take a walk through Dundalk town centre, photographing as they go.

A previous meeting of the group earlier this month brought about some fantastic images, which can be viewed by using the hashtag #iDMeet001 on Instagram.

All are invited to attend and the activity is suited for those with any type of camera, from a mobile phone to a DSLR.

Dundalk farm on the market for €1.1m

0c39b59089_mA 278.2 acre farm on the outskirts of Dundalk, which plays a pivotal role as a flood plain for the town, has gone on the market for €1.1 million.

Rockview Farm on the Blackrock Road is located opposite the Kingswood housing estate, as well as the Bay Utd and Na Piarsaigh football pitches. It is also adjacent to Dundalk Retail Park

The farm, which is on the market with Sherry FitzGerald Carroll estate agents, is described as a fine parcel of land and for the most part is characterised by large fields of good quality tillage lands. The land comprise 112.59 hectares / 278.20 acres (approx) in total of which 157 acres (approx) are in tillage, 30 acres (approx) are in drainage, roadways and waste and the balance of 91 acres (approx) is in saltings.

The tillage lands are level in nature and are laid out in 11 divisions with a small redundant farmyard fronting the western boundary. Rockview Farm benefits from extensive road frontage of approximately 1,000 meters and the lands can be accessed from five entrances. The farm also incorporates a network of drains and canals which assist in draining the lands and the eastern part of Dundalk town.

Beyond the canal and rampart are the saltings, which comprises an area of land extending to over 91 acres. This area of lands may be suited to grazing purposes, however, it is subject to tidal movements and consists of seabanks and waterways.

The majority of the property is currently zoned “Residential 2” and is subject to the proposed Rockview Farm Local Area Plan. Within the Core Strategy Variation introduced in 2012 to the Dundalk & Environs Development Plan 2009 – 2015 the lands are now in Phase 3. However, from the Irish Coastal Protection Strategy Study (Phase 3 – North East Coast) and the OPW Flood Hazard Maps (www.floodmaps.ie) the lands are designated as flood plain.

The Department of Defence have a right of way, along the laneway to the northern boundary of Rockview Farm, to access their lands.

You can read more on the property on the Sherry FitzGerald website here.

Sgt Morrissey RIP

A man serving a 40 year sentence for murdering a Garda in County Louth has won his Supreme Court bid to be considered for remission.

Noel Callan was 22 years old when convicted by the non-jury Special Criminal Court in 1985 of the capital murder of Sgt Patrick Morrissey.

The garda was shot at Rathbrist, Tallanstown in June of that year following an armed robbery at the Ardee labour exchange.

Callan was sentenced to death at the time but this was then changed to 40 years in prison.

O’Connor inquest could be “derailed”

AN inquest into the death of a dissident republican murdered because he was a suspected police informant could be “derailed”, a coroner’s court was told yesterday.

The investigation into the death of Gareth O’Connor, who disappeared in May 2003 on his way to sign bail at Dundalk Garda Station, is facing significant delay because his family want to see sensitive police papers which identify people linked to the killing.

The 24-year-old father-of-two from Knockamell Park in Armagh was discovered inside a car in Newry Canal in June 2005 – over two years after going missing.

Gerry McAlinden, barrister for the Coroners Service, said naming certain individuals could put them at risk of death or assault and under the State’s duty to protect life each person had to be given an opportunity to challenge the disclosure.

He said: “If their names may be revealed through the process of this investigation, you (coroner) have to allow them to know in advance that such disclosure is going to take place and thereafter allow them to make representation to you (coroner) in advance. This procedure has the potential to derail the timescale of this inquest but it is a procedure that has to be gone through.”

A non jury inquest is scheduled for November but Mr McAlinden raised concerns that timescale could slip.

New development planned for Market Square?

The two buildings at Market Square, which have gone sale agreed in recent weeks

Maybe we’re reading too much into it at Talk of the Town but could a new development be in the pipeline for the Market Square.

Two premises on the Square, opposite Panama Café and in between McGuill Travel and The Works Barber Shop, have gone ‘Sale Agreed’ with local estate agents Sherry FitzGerald Carroll in recent weeks. The fact the two buildings are in need of refurbishment and that they come with land behind them suggests there would be room for a new development.

What would you like to see built at the Square if a new development is being planned?

Stephen O’Donnell’s late strike earned Dundalk a 2-2 draw against Cork City at Turner’s Cross in the Airtricity League Premier Division last night.

Ciarán Kilduff opened the scoring for the home side in the third minute, before Brian Gartland levelled matters 20 minutes later.

Gartland, a recent signing for the club, then had a second goal ruled out controversially for what was adjudged to have been a foul on the goalkeeper.

Daryl Kavanagh 63rd minute penalty appeared to have earned the Leesiders all three points, but captain O’Donnell’s 89th equaliser earned Stephen Kenny’s side what could prove a vital point in their chase for the title.

Cork City: Mark McNulty, Danny Murphy, Gearóid Morrissey, Daryl Kavanagh (Ian Turner 90′), John Dunleavy, Garry Buckley, Dan Murray, Kalen Spillane, Neal Horgan (C), Daryl Horgan, Ciarán Kilduff.

Subs: Danny Furlong, Brian Lenihan, Stephen Kenny, Rob Lehane, David Browne (GK), John Kavanagh.

Moran demands apology for Senator’s “insulting” remarks

Local Labour Party Senator Mary Moran has called on a Fianna Fáil senator to withdraw his “insulting” comments about Special Olympics athletes being prevented from being born.

But Brian O’Domhnaill, who claimed that allowing abortions in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities would be “depriving future Special Olympics athletes of being born”, has refused to say sorry.

He was speaking in opposition to an amendment to the abortion bill, which would have allowed for abortions to be carried out in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities.

But Labour senator Moran, whose son Cillian (15) is a Special Olympics competitor, said she was appalled by his comments.

“They are scaremongering and they are insulting,” she told The Irish Independent.

Ms Moran pointed out that unborn children with fatal foetal abnormalities had no chance of surviving outside the womb and would never grow up to become Special Olympics athletes.

She called on Mr O’Domhnaill to apologise.

His comments came on the same day that Ms Moran brought Cillian and other Games competitors to the Seanad to listen to her motion on the Special Olympics programme.

She said she was disappointed that last Wednesday’s debate had been overshadowed, and that Mr O’Domhnaill had not turned up for it.

“He didn’t participate in the debate on the Special Olympics at all. You come out with these brash statements and you are not there,” she said.
