The road linking the Xerox junction to the M1 motorway is closed this morning following a serious road crash overnight outside the entrance to the Technology Park, which is home to the likes of eBay, PayPal and National Pen.

The incident happened around 2am with both Gardaí and Dundalk Fire Service called to the scene and the road remains closed this morning, with diversions in place.

Those travelling from the M1 motorway/N52 Ardee Road are able to travel into Dundalk on the dual carriageway though with only the lane exiting Dundalk affected.

Meanwhile, ESB networks are reporting a “large fault” in the Blackrock area of Dundalk, with some properties in the town also affected. They hope to have the situation rectified by 11.30am.

Mr Bombastic himself, Shaggy, has links to Dundalk it appears.

The ‘It Wasn’t Me’ singer has been spotted in Galway this week on his holidays.

Yesterday morning he appeared on 98FM’s Ray Foley Show and made a shocking revelation.

“My wife is Irish. She’s from Dundalk.”

Shaggy later clarified that his wife, Rebecca Packer Burrell, is half-Irish and half-Jamaican. Her mother is Dr Veronica Salter, an Irishwoman who moved to Jamaica in the early 1970s and worked as a psychotherapist and counsellor.

The whole family are now here on holidays. Who knows, maybe they’ll stop by Dundalk as Shaggy already confirmed he is in Dublin today.

Richie Towell then fired the side in front with an exquisite lob before a Paddy Barrett header just before half-time gave the visitors a 3-1 lead at the break.

Sean Gannon then made sure of the win with a thunderbolt strike in the second half. Dundalk now look forward to the draw for the quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon.

Warning issued over potentially poisonous mussels, some of which were sold locally

Mussels_largeIf you bought mussels in Dundalk this week then please don’t eat them as they could be potentially poisonous.

A warning has been issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) after it was revealed that the mussels, harvested at Roaring Water Bay in Co Cork on Monday and Tuesday, may contain harmful levels of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins.

The mussels were sold at a number of locations around the country including locally at J&C Fish in Dundalk, Morgan’s Fine Fish in Omeath and Morgan’s Fish Stand in Dundalk, as well as some Dunnes Stores outlets.

Anyone who has taken ill from eating mussels earlier in the week is also urged to seek medical attention immediately.

Poisoning from affected batches can lead to diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and cramps for several days.

Dr Pamela Byrne, chief executive of the FSAI, said consumers who may have bought the implicated mussels should not to eat them.

“Cooking does not destroy this toxin,” she said.

The food safety watchdog said the affected mussels were sold at the following outlets from Wednesday onwards:

  • * Some Dunnes Stores outlets, with the use-by date of 21.08.2015
  • * Some SuperValu outlets, where mussels were sold in 2kg and 5kg bags with use-by date of 22.08.2015
  • * Beshoff’s, West Pier, Howth, Co Dublin – mussels sold in 1kg net bags with use-by date of 20.08.2015
  • * Doran’s, West Pier, Howth, Co Dublin
  • * Kish Fish, Malahide Road, Coolock, and at Bow Street, Smithfield, Dublin.
  • * The Dublin Fish Shop, Queen Street, Dublin 7
  • * Morgan’s Fine Fish, Omeath, Co Louth
  • * Glenmar, Union Hall, Co Cork
  • * Normandy Ireland, Schull, Co Cork
  • * Baltimore Fresh Fish, Baltimore, Co Cork
  • * O’Driscoll’s, Schull, Co Cork
  • * Bantry Central Fish, Bantry, Co Cork
  • * J&C Fish, Dundalk, Co Louth
  • * Keoghs Fish Shop, New Quay, Clonmel, Co Tipperary
  • * Seacatch Retail Fish Stand, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan
  • * Morgans Fish Stand, Park Street, Dundalk, Co Louth

The FSAI said potentially poisonous mussels have been removed from sale at outlets, and warned anyone who may have already bought some to check with the store where they purchased them and not to eat them.

“Eating contaminated mussels could cause diarrhetic shellfish poisoning,” said Dr Byrne.

“Symptoms are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain which can start between 30 minutes to a few hours after ingestion.

“Complete recovery occurs within a number of days.

“Consumers who may have already consumed this product and are feeling unwell should seek medical advice.”

Work beginning on the N53 yesterday as captured by Cllr Sharkey

Yesterday saw the N53 Dundalk to Castleblayney Road close for resurfacing and widening works with major problems caused for motorists along the road.

Last night local councillor Tomás Sharkey describing it as a “crisis day for traffic and public safety.”

The Sinn Féin representative accused the diversion routes of being inadequate to carry the increased load of traffic and said these routes were poorly signposted.

He feels the existing road could be traffic lighted as far as the next junction during the roadworks.

One road user described the diversion routes as “lethal”, while another said they were too narrow to take traffic.

The N53 is due to remain closes between Barronstown and Hackballscross until mid to late November.

Dundalk woman won’t let scarring deter her from Miss Ireland title

A local woman is determined to become the next Miss Ireland despite an unfortunate accident with a champagne glass that has left her scarred for life.

Dundalk native Yasmin Hamoud was attending an event recently when her high heels went from under her and she was cut by a glass.

She told today’s Herald: “I was at a party when a group of us were asked to come together for a photograph.

“I twisted on my heels and when I feel the glass splintered through my hand. It was so bad that the wouldn’t let me look at it,” said Yasmin.

The business studies student was due to sit her final year exams the following week and had to defer them as a result.

“When I got to the hospital they told me there was an 80pc chance I wouldn’t regain the use of my hand,” she said.

“If I’d been cut a few millimetres further down my wrist I could have lost the use of my whole arm.

“Luckily, it wasn’t that bad – I haven’t any feeling in three of my fingers but hopefully it’ll come back slowly as the nerves heel.

“I’ve had a few operations and I’m still in and out of the hospital for check-ups,” she added.

Instead of having her hair done, picking outfits and practising her strut, Yasmin has spent the last few weeks studying – sitting her final Dublin Institute of Technology exam yesterday.

“The Miss Ireland final is on Friday, but I decided to put everything into my exams and focus on the competition for the rest of the week,” she said.

“I had to do my exams on a laptop because of my hand, but I’m so grateful that it wasn’t much worse.

“I wouldn’t normally be an overly confident person, but this has convinced me to just go for it. I entered a few years back, but I’m a lot more comfortable with who I am now,” she added.

This year will mark the first time the bikini contest has been removed from the beauty pageant, and Yasmin (22) welcomes the change.

“I think it takes a lot of pressure off the girls,” she said.

“It’s more about focussing on the beauty with a purpose.”

Win or lose, Yasmin is hoping to pursue a career in modelling and has been signed as the global ambassador for Sizers.

The brand sells shoe-sizing cushions, and they are hoping the shoe fits for Yasmin as they’re sponsoring her entry to Miss Ireland.

Meanwhile, the judges for the contest, which is sponsored by Gold Fever Hair Extensions, have also been revealed.

This year’s winner will be chosen by former crown holders, Aoife Walsh, Rebecca Maguire and Amanda Brunker, as well as So Sue Me’s Suzanne Jackson and Gold Fever creator, Katie-Jane Gold.
